Honest comparison

A simpler alternative to Backgammon Galaxy

No account. Nothing to buy in order to play. No forced ads.

Backgammon Galaxy is the prestige platform for serious tournament players. Gammon42 is for the rest of us — players who want to open the board, play, and learn, without the friction of accounts, currencies and dark patterns.

Why this page exists

If you searched for a Backgammon Galaxy alternative, you probably bumped into something that bothered you — coin economics, an opaque subscription, the feeling that the dice aren't fair. Frequently asked

Is Gammon42 free?
Yes. There is nothing to buy in order to play, no paywall and no subscription. Power-up packs are optional purchases, and the only ads are opt-in rewarded videos (you watch one to claim a small bonus); ads never interrupt gameplay.
How are the dice generated?
On the server, with a cryptographically secure generator. Every online game also comes with a proof: a SHA-256 commitment is published before the game starts and the seed is revealed at the end, so the app verifies every roll and you can repeat the check yourself.
Do I need to create an account to play?
No. Open the board and play. To play a friend, send your invite link or your friend code — neither of you needs to register.
Are there mobile apps?
Yes. Gammon42 is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android, and the web version runs in any mobile browser.
What about tournaments and ranked play?
Ranked games with an ELO rating and public and private tournaments are live. If official events, grandmaster content and engine analysis matter most to you, Galaxy is still the right pick.
Why should I trust your comparison?
Because every claim above is verifiable today. We document our decisions publicly (including this page), and we'd rather lose a user to Galaxy on day one than over-promise and lose them on day 30.
