How a backgammon tournament works in Gammon42

Every tournament follows a clear schedule, shown in the Lobby with a countdown to the start:

  1. Registration. Open the Tournaments section, pick a public tournament and tap Register. You’ll instantly see how many spots are taken and how many more players are needed for the tournament to start.
  2. Check-in. Shortly before the start, check-in opens. Tap Check In to confirm you’re there and keep your spot. Pairings are only drawn once check-in closes, so only players who showed up make it into the bracket.
  3. The draw. The bracket is built by rating: the strongest players are seeded, so they don’t meet in the first round.
  4. Matches. When your match is ready, you get a notification. You have a few minutes to join, or you forfeit the match. If you have no opponent in a round, you advance automatically.
  5. Final and podium. Winners move on through the quarterfinals and semifinals to the final. The two semifinal losers play a third-place match.

Public online backgammon tournaments with ELO prizes

Public tournaments are open to everyone, and entry is free. Each tournament shows its rules before you register: match length, whether the doubling cube is in play, and whether power-ups are allowed. You can pick a quick tournament with 1-point matches, or a longer one where strategy across several games really counts.

The top three win prizes, displayed on the podium in the lobby. For example, +50 ELO for 1st place, +25 ELO for 2nd and +15 ELO for 3rd. One good tournament can give your ranking a real boost.

If not enough players sign up before the start, the tournament is canceled and the reason is shown right in the list. The tournament list has status filters (created, registration open, check-in, in progress) and a search field.

The tournament bracket and final podium

The Bracket tab shows the whole tournament bracket: who’s playing whom, the scores, and who moves on to the next round. You can Watch live as matches are played, even after you’ve been knocked out.

Play backgammon tournaments with friends

Backgammon is better with friends. From a tournament lobby, tap Invite friends to pick them from your list, or send them a link so they can grab a spot next to you. Invitations you receive show up in the Invites tab. If you just want a game between the two of you, no tournament needed, see how to play backgammon with friends online.

New in 1.2.1: you can now create your own private backgammon tournament, open only to the friends you invite.

What else is new in Gammon42 1.2.0

  • The move timer now counts. Run out of time three times in an online game and you lose the game. That means fewer matches stuck because an opponent walked away from their phone.
  • Rebalanced ELO. Rating changes are fairer and more gradual.
  • Profile pictures in the leaderboards. Tap any player to view their profile.
  • Chat fixes. Special characters display correctly, and messages stay in sync.
  • Plenty of other fixes and improvements throughout the app.

How to get the update

If you already have Gammon42, your phone will update it automatically. You can also install version 1.2.0 right now from the App Store or Google Play. Prefer your browser? You can play backgammon online for free, right in your browser.
